Leather iPhone 17 Pro & 17 Pro Max Cases: How to Choose a Good One (Nappa, MagSafe, Engraving) — 2026 Guide

Leather iPhone 17 Pro & 17 Pro Max Cases: How to Choose a Good One (Nappa, MagSafe, Engraving) — 2026 Guide

Of everything you own, your phone case is probably the object you touch most. It sits in your hand for hours a day and lands on every café table you visit, which is the strongest argument for a leather iPhone 17 Pro case over a plastic one: polycarbonate scuffs and stays scuffed, while good leather softens, warms and quietly improves. Whether you are after an iPhone 17 Pro Max leather case or a MagSafe leather case for the iPhone 17 Pro, 2026 brings one new consideration. Apple has widened the camera island into a plateau across the back of the phone, so a case has to be cut and reinforced differently from last year's.

Nappa, full-grain or "vegan leather"?

"Leather" on a product page covers an uncomfortably wide range. At the top sits full-grain: the outer layer of the hide left intact, the most durable leather there is and the one that patinas most deeply. Nappa leather is that same top layer, selected from finer hides and tanned to stay supple, with a fine, smooth, even grain. It is softer in the hand than a belt leather, which matters in an object you hold all day. Harrow's cases are cut from Italian nappa leather for that reason: warm on day one, softening with use rather than stiffening.

Below both sits "genuine leather", often bonded offcuts pressed together with polyurethane, and below that "vegan leather", PU or PVC on a fabric backing. Real leather smells of leather; PU smells faintly of a new shower curtain. Natural hide has pores of varying size and the odd crease, whereas a printed grain repeats perfectly every few centimetres. A cut edge of leather shows a dense, fibrous cross-section; PU reveals cloth or foam under a thin skin. Finally, leather wears in; PU wears out, cracking at the corners within a year. Our guide to full-grain vs. genuine leather goes into more detail.

A MagSafe leather case for the iPhone 17 Pro: the magnets must be built in

MagSafe is where many leather cases quietly fail. Leather adds distance between the phone's magnets and whatever you are attaching, so a plain shell with no magnets of its own holds a charger weakly, if at all. A proper MagSafe leather case has a magnet ring laminated between the leather and the inner shell, aligned to Apple's own array. You should feel a firm, centred snap the moment a charger touches it.

Metal trim is fine provided it is designed around that ring. Polished steel at the camera frame or the base sits well clear of the charging zone, which is how Harrow pairs steel details with full MagSafe compatibility: the hardware lives where the magnets are not.

Protecting the camera island and the buttons

The new camera plateau meets the table first every time you put the phone down. There are two ways to protect it. The first is a raised leather lip around the opening, but nappa is a yielding material, and a leather edge is the first thing on any case to compress and fray. The second is an open cut-out finished with a metal frame, which takes the contact and leaves the lenses uncovered. Harrow takes the second route: an open camera cut-out finished with a slim polished stainless-steel frame carrying a laser-engraved HARROW logo.

Leather-wrapped buttons feel lovely in the shop and vague within a month. Metal button caps keep a precise click for the life of the case, a sign the maker expected it to be used, not merely photographed.

Generation fit: an iPhone 17 Pro Max leather case is not a 17 Pro case

Two mistakes recur. The first is assuming last year's case will do. It will not: the 17 Pro's camera island is a different shape and the body has changed, so a 16 Pro case either will not seat or leaves the camera exposed. The second is treating the 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max as interchangeable; the Pro Max is taller and wider, and a case is cut to a fraction of a millimetre. Buy the exact model, and if gifting, check which one the recipient carries. Harrow makes a dedicated leather iPhone 17 Pro case and a dedicated iPhone 17 Pro Max leather case, each in six leather colours: Black, Graphite, Burgundy, Olive, Cognac and Ivory.

Engraving: steel plaque or hot-stamp?

An engraved phone case makes a better gift than a hot-stamped one, and the difference is how the mark is made. Hot-stamping presses initials into the leather, sometimes with a foil; on soft nappa the impression relaxes with handling, and foil wears away from the corners inwards. Engraving a steel plaque is a different thing entirely: the letters are cut into the metal, so they cannot rub off, fade or flatten, and look as crisp in year three as on day one.

Every Harrow case carries a polished steel plaque at the base, engraved with the customer's initials at no extra charge, which makes a personalised iPhone case the obvious choice for an anniversary or a graduation. If you are buying for two, the basket takes 20% off the second case automatically. Because engraving makes the case yours alone, the 60-day return applies to un-engraved cases.

How to judge a leather iPhone 17 Pro case in 60 seconds

What to check A good case A poor case
Grain and smell Irregular pores and the warm smell of tanned hide A perfectly repeating pattern and a chemical note
Cut edges Dense, fibrous and neatly finished Visible fabric or foam under a thin skin
MagSafe A firm, centred snap from a magnet ring built into the case A weak hold, or "compatible" meaning merely "thin"
Camera island A metal frame or substantial lip that takes contact with the table A bare leather edge that will compress and fray
Buttons and engraving Metal caps with a precise click; a steel plaque or other permanent mark Mushy leather buttons; foil initials that will rub away

Frequently asked questions

Does a leather case work with MagSafe?

Only if the magnets are built into the case; leather alone blocks too much of the field for a reliable hold. Harrow's 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max cases are fully MagSafe compatible.

Is nappa leather durable?

Yes, when it is the top layer of the hide rather than a thin split. Nappa is softer than saddle leather but still a full-depth grain that patinas rather than cracks, and steel at the camera and base means the leather is never the only line of defence.

Will an iPhone 17 Pro case fit the 17 Pro Max?

No. The two phones differ in height and width, and a case is cut to the exact model, so order the Pro case for a 17 Pro and the Pro Max case for a 17 Pro Max.

How do I care for a leather case?

Wipe it with a dry or barely damp cloth, keep it away from radiators and direct sun, and let it dry naturally if it gets wet. Colour deepening at the edges is patina, not damage.

How long does made-to-order take, and can I return it?

Harrow cases are made to order and ship within 45 days from the EU. Un-engraved cases can be returned within 60 days; engraved cases cannot. Delivery is free until 31 October 2026.

A good case should feel better each month and never ask for attention.
