What belt to wear with a suit: colour, width, buckle

What belt to wear with a suit: colour, width, buckle

Updated: 28 October 2026

The short answer to what belt to wear with a suit: match the leather to your shoes (black shoes, black belt; brown shoes, brown belt), keep the strap 3–3.5 cm wide, and choose a slim, low-profile buckle in the same metal as your watch or cufflinks. A black or dark brown full-grain leather belt will cover almost every suit in a wardrobe, from navy to charcoal, and the belt should be the least noticeable thing you have on.

Black or brown belt with a navy suit?

Both work, and the shoes decide, not the suit. Navy with black oxfords calls for a black belt; navy with dark brown or oxblood shoes calls for a brown belt of a similar depth. The pairing that most often goes wrong is brown shoes with a black belt: the eye reads it as two unrelated decisions made in a hurry. If you own one belt and wear navy most days, dark brown is the more useful choice, because it also carries grey suits and weekend denim. Black is the safer choice if your suits are mostly charcoal and your shoes are black, and it is the only correct answer for a black suit or dinner jacket.

Matching does not mean identical. Leather from two tanneries is never the same shade; aim for the same family (black with black, mid or dark brown with brown) and a similar finish.

How wide should a suit belt be?

Between 3 and 3.5 cm. Suit trousers are cut with narrower loops than jeans, and anything above 4 cm will either not pass through or will bunch the waistband. Below 3 cm the belt starts to look like a woman's dress belt or a piece of formalwear trim. Harrow Collection cuts its belts at 3.5 cm, the upper end of the dress range: it passes through standard suit trouser loops and still works with chinos.

Which buckle works with a suit?

Small, flat and the same metal as the rest of what you are wearing. If your watch is steel, choose brushed silver. If it has a black or dark grey case, or you wear no watch at all, gun metal and carbon finishes disappear under the jacket and read as more modern. Avoid large western-style plates, logos and high-gloss chrome, which catch the light and pull attention to the waist.

Initials on a buckle are a quiet detail, not a statement: a three-letter monogram in a Classic or Script face is invisible from more than a metre away, which is how it should be with a suit. Harrow Collection engraves up to three characters on the buckle at no charge.

Does a ratchet belt work with a suit?

Yes, provided it is cut and finished as a dress belt rather than a tactical or gym belt. A ratchet (automatic) belt has no holes; a toothed track on the inside of the strap locks into the buckle in roughly 5 mm steps, so you set the tension precisely rather than choosing between two holes 2.5 cm apart. Under a suit that matters: one hole too tight creases the shirt, one hole too loose lets the trousers drop. From the front, a well-made ratchet belt looks like any plain dress belt. Where it does not belong is black tie, where the correct answer is braces and no belt at all.

The automatic Italian leather belt with brushed silver buckle is the version most of our customers wear to the office: Italian full-grain leather, nubuck lining, 3.5 cm wide, in black or brown. If you want to see the rest of the range, including carbon and gun metal buckles, the belts collection has all three finishes.

What belt to wear with a suit: size and width table

Dress belts are sold by strap length, and a ratchet belt is cut to your waist on arrival, so you buy the length band that covers you and trim once. The table below is the sizing Harrow Collection uses; 110 cm is the length bought most often, followed by 100 and 120 cm.

Belt length Trouser waist Strap width Leather and lining Buckle finishes
90 cm up to 34 in 3.5 cm Italian full-grain, nubuck lining Brushed silver, carbon, gun metal
100 cm 34–38 in 3.5 cm Italian full-grain, nubuck lining Brushed silver, carbon, gun metal
110 cm 38–42 in 3.5 cm Italian full-grain, nubuck lining Brushed silver, carbon, gun metal
120 cm 42 in and over 3.5 cm Italian full-grain, nubuck lining Brushed silver, carbon, gun metal

Adjustment is in steps of about 5 mm across the track, which is why one length band covers four inches of waist. Trimming takes two minutes with scissors; the steps are in our guide on how to cut a ratchet belt to size.

What belt to wear with a suit if you own only one?

Black with a brushed silver buckle, 3.5 cm wide, full-grain leather. It is correct with navy, charcoal and black suits and with every black shoe you own. Buy a dark brown second if your rotation includes brown shoes; the two together cover the whole wardrobe. If you order a black and a brown belt in the same size at Harrow Collection, the second belt is discounted by 20% automatically in the basket, which is the practical way to solve the problem in one order rather than two.

Who this belt is not for: anyone who wants a wide, heavy belt for jeans and boots, or a visible designer buckle. It is deliberately quiet.

When should you skip the belt altogether?

With a dinner suit, with a waistcoat (the belt line shows above the waistcoat's bottom button and breaks the silhouette), and with trousers that have side adjusters and no loops. Braces are correct with all three. For an everyday two-piece lounge suit with belt loops, an empty loop looks unfinished, so wear one.

FAQ

Can I wear a brown belt with a black suit?

No. A black suit is the one case where the belt must be black, and the shoes must be black too. Brown reads as casual against black cloth and the contrast is too strong at the waist.

Should my belt match my shoes or my suit?

Your shoes. The suit colour is almost irrelevant: navy, grey and charcoal all take black or brown depending on the footwear. Match the leather family and the finish, not the exact shade.

Is 3.5 cm too wide for a suit belt?

No. The dress range is 3 to 3.5 cm, and 3.5 cm passes through standard suit trouser loops. Belts of 4 cm and above are casual and will not fit most suit trousers.

Does a belt need to match my watch?

The buckle should sit in the same metal family as your watch case and cufflinks: brushed silver with steel, gun metal or carbon with dark cases. The leather of the strap and the watch strap can differ.

How long does a Harrow Collection belt take to arrive?

Belts ship from the EU, and every order has 60-day returns. Engraving is done before dispatch. If you are buying one as a present, the gifts collection lists the belts that come in a rigid magnetic box.
